Raising the Bar: From Opportunity to Impact
Some leadership journeys begin with a title. Dr. Andraé Townsel's began with opportunity, discipline, and a commitment to excellence.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Townsel transformed a football scholarship to Howard University into a lifetime of educational leadership. He earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Howard University before embarking on a distinguished career dedicated to helping students realize their full potential.
Today, as Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer of Hartford Public Schools, Dr. Townsel leads one of New England's largest and most diverse public school districts. His career has included service as a teacher, coach, dean, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent—providing him with a unique perspective on every level of K–12 education.
Leadership Philosophy
Dr. Townsel is widely recognized for a leadership philosophy that challenges students, educators, and organizations to pursue continuous growth:
"SET THE BAR. MEET THE BAR. EXCEED THE BAR. RAISE THE BAR!"
More than a motto, these words represent his belief that excellence is achieved through intentional effort, high expectations, and an unwavering commitment to improvement.
From Opportunity to Impact
One of the most inspiring aspects of Dr. Townsel's journey is how opportunity became purpose.
A football scholarship opened the door to higher education. That opportunity became three university degrees. Those degrees became a career devoted to serving students, strengthening schools, and leading educational systems.
